Joselito Hernandez lost the vision on his right eye at nine years old when his cousin accidentally struck his eye with the machete he was working the land with. He was moved to Santo Domingo from the country side of Samana in the Dominican Republic with his grandmother in the hopes for better medical assistance but due to their extreme economic situation they moved to a notoriously impoverished and crime inflicted neighborhood called “Gualey” in the capital. At 12 years old and while he was asleep a stray bullet landed exactly on his left eye now leaving him completely blind. He remains living in the same house in which the stray bullet almost cost him his life. In collaboration with the National Patronato de Ciegos in Santo Domingo Joselito continues to hope for ways to sustain himself and eventually become self-sufficient.
